An Alice in Onederland Birthday Party
My little girl turned one this month (May) so of course, we had to host a themed birthday party! We chose to do an Alice in Wonderland-themed first birthday party, which we accurately dubbed “Addie in Onederland” – and it was perfect.
I mean, just look at how happy (and cute) she was in her Onederland first birthday outfit and enjoying her smash cake.
Honestly, birthday parties make me extremely stressed as I am a very forgetful mama. Needless to say, I was running around like a chicken with my head chopped off on Friday, making preparations for the brunch birthday party on Saturday. Things I forgot to do:
- Order the birthday cake and cupcakes
- Invite A LOT of family members
- Make the food
- Bring out the drinks
- Buy her presents???
I’m sure there are more – but those were the ones that stressed me out and made me feel like bad mom #1. Here’s how the day went:

The “Addie” in Wonderland Party Decorations & Desserts
There’s a lot to unpack here… partially because I had a few decorations and desserts that I prepared way ahead of time (like a week) and those that I had to purchase the night before and do what I could to make it work.
For example, these super cute “Take One, Eat Me, Try Me” Wonderland Cupcakes and Cupcake toppers only happened because I took off the rings from the Mickey Mouse and Unicorn cupcakes I found at Food Lion – which were, of course, the last two packs of cupcakes that were NOT graduation themed:
I love how they turned out. The colors matched the more tea party-themed Alice in Wonderland Birthday party that I was going for, but still.

Here’s what they looked like before the party and right after I smoothed out the dents the rings left and added the cupcake toppers I bought on Amazon earlier in the week.
Funny enough, the cake was the same way just without the topper. I was very lucky that they had a 6-inch round cake in the same colors to use for Addie’s smash cake.
I wasn’t too worried about finding a specifically themed cake, to begin with since I purchased the cake topper on Amazon too. It was a gold glitter Wonderland-themed first “Happy First Birthday” topper:
Honestly, it was a great reminder that even though you can find some great cakes and birthday cake inspiration out there – a grocery store cake with an adorable cake topper can look just as cute!
I had big goals for the decorations, but they didn’t pan out how I wanted. The kids gave my husband a rough time in the morning so he couldn’t prepare the food part which led to my mom and I attempting to get it done 45 minutes before the party started – which didn’t work out.
Luckily, we still got out the most important – and my favorite – decorations that I ordered. I was able to successfully put out the banner that hung on her highchair:
I also had these cool Wonderland-inspired signs to hang up around the party area and these paper flowers that my mom and I “puffed up” that morning. We messed up quite a few and didn’t have the tools to hang them all up, so they ended up in VERY random places:
Last, but not least, we hung up a banner with photos of Addie from month one to month twelve – which I think ended up bringing a few tears to some family members’ eyes watching how much she’s grown.
The banner was simple to put up and it was great to look through all the pictures I took of her throughout her first year when I was choosing which pictures I wanted to put in.
We had a hard time finding the right place to hang it up due to the limited areas outside. We ended up putting it above the bar where family members were relaxing and eating. I loved how it looked, but wish I would have made it myself due to the odd number and letter placements.
That sums up the majority of our decorations and desserts. While I felt like I didn’t do much planning, overall I feel that the theme was clearly shown and it all led to the perfect first birthday party. Plus, she won’t remember it so I’ll just make sure she gets all the good photos in a scrapbook when she’s curious.
I’m thinking about creating a full list covering everything I purchased and what I thought about them in the future – so if this is something you’re interested in, let me know!
Onederland Themed Birthday Outfit
Technically, we skipped a lot with her outfit, over half of it to be exact. I found this super cute outfit on Etsy (it was the very first thing I bought) and LOVED the look. Sadly, Addie has super tiny feet so we weren’t able to use the shoes or the socks. It was okay in the end as it was too hot to put the poor baby in something that warm, even if only for a minute.
Her wide little bottom would have been too big for the 9/12, but the 12/18 was perfect around the bottom and able to be tightened around the top. This made it super easy to get her dressed too!
Addie was the ABSOLUTE CUTEST. That’s it, that’s all I have to say.
Okay, there’s a little more. Thanks to it being super thin fabric and having a more open back, my sweet summer baby stayed pretty cool even in 90-degree weather. I’m so glad I grabbed it because otherwise, she would have wound up in just a diaper running around – although there’s nothing wrong with that!
Even her cake didn’t make a HUGE mess on it! We wiped the majority off and only a few colorful spots remained and I’m pretty sure we washed them all out that night. You can kinda see some of the spots in this picture of her on her little Minnie Mouse airplane:
A “One”derland Tea Party-themed First Birthday
10/10 would do it again. We had so much fun with the theme, the kids had fun, and Addie seemed to enjoy it. It was pretty easy to set up, so no complaints there (except the husband debacle), and not overly expensive to execute.
