My Sunflower Field Maternity Photoshoot

As we recently celebrated my son’s fifth birthday, it had me thinking back to when I just found out I was pregnant (only a few days before my 20th birthday) and the entire experience of pregnancy. I was swollen and sweaty (thanks to an August 3rd due date) and decided to make the most out of my summer pregnancy—which meant I was absolutely taking sunflower field maternity photos.

These were semi-professional photos my sister took for me because I wasn’t ready to invest in a true professional photographer (although I did for my daughter’s newborn photos, I learned my lesson). She’s got a good eye, a professional camera, a few years of on-and-off experience, and access to a free sunflower field in full bloom.

It was everything we needed!

Planning the Photoshoot: What I Wore, Hair, And Makeup

All of my clothes were from Motherhood Maternity. Knowing what I know now (a mom of three), I probably wouldn’t have picked these specific outfits and would have opted for something from Amazon or somewhere else with more styles.

In fact, I didn’t even want the yellow shirt—my sister and mom insisted—because who doesn’t want to wear a yellow shirt to their Sunflower Field photoshoot?

For hair, I braided it myself and let it down later in the shoot for some variety (although, with the long white dress, it felt like I was giving “Mad Max” concubine vibes). As for make-up, I didn’t wear any! It was honestly just too hot to bother.

Fun fact: I changed my hair and dress each time in the back of my sister’s Kia Soul. Let me tell you, there was not enough space for a swollen pregnant woman. Thankfully, my ankles (if you could even call them that) were not the highlight of the photos.

We kept most photos above the waist and featured the belly with a few artistic shots here and there! Most of the ones in the fitted white dress were my favorites, and I’ve printed them out for safekeeping.

Since my mom was there (and my sister was taking photos), she couldn’t help but hop in a photo or two! Sadly, I wasn’t up for much – but the photos are gorgeous and really took advantage of the lighting and sunflowers available.

My son is my mom’s first grandchild and is now (and was then) completely spoiled by her! They’re even planning a vacation without me this summer!

But, then again, I will most likely be in labor that weekend so I can’t blame them both for skipping town until the hard work is done!

And, although I love these photos, I will most likely never do a sunflower shoot again! It was hot, miserable, and – did I mention I’m highly allergic to bees? – filled with bees…

Yes, I know that they will most likely not sting me, but you can’t blame me for being anxious over the possibility!

There was also the slight surprise that my little man came a week before his actual due date! I’m glad I didn’t decide to wait long on the photos lol. Yet, I don’t think I ever took as many photos as when I was pregnant.

Why Choose to Take Sunflower Field Maternity Photos?

Because I can. We all have our preferences and while I pregnant with my son, I thought that a sunflower field maternity photoshoot would be amazing (and look amazing) and I was right! I absolutely love my maternity photos from my first pregnancy – although that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do anything different.

If I was able to plan ahead, I would have brought extra water and a full size mirror. We were lacking when it came to getting ready and switching outfits since it was in the middle of a field. On top of that, I would have brought an additional, casual outfit for everyday photos since I’m more of a ‘casual photo’ fan rather than a ‘luxury’ or styled photo.

I also spent most of the day on my feet beforehand, which cause my swelling to be out of control by the time I arrived. Next time, I would rest for the first part of the day before heading out during the ‘golden hour’ – when the lighting for an outdoor photo is best!
