“This Chick is Two” A Chicken-Themed 2nd Birthday Party

Celebrations

If there’s one thing I’m absolutely obsessed with, it’s throwing a birthday party that’s themed based on something my littles ones love in the moment. Sure, it could be considered slightly extra, but, honestly, I don’t go all out and they absolutely love it. Have you ever seen a toddler light up surrounded by what they think is the coolest thing in the world? No? Try it!

That’s the vibe I kept for my two-year-olds birthday this past year. It was the year we decided to get chickens and she thinks they’re the coolest. And since we’re all about learning responsibility here, she’s also in charge of gathering the eggs while we feed the hens.

We kept the colors less pinks and more blues, greens, oranges, and purples (and a little bit pink) to keep her birthday nice and bright, but not overwhelming. Here’s everything we grabbed, what we DIY-ed, what we didn’t and how it turned out:

Throwing a “This Chick is Two” Chicken-Themed Birthday

I know I said we tried to avoid too many pink things, but the kits included them and when my sister sent me a picture of the pink lace for her birthday outfit, it kinda became more prevalent!! Either way it turned out super cute and she loved all the chickens (and themed chicken things).

The hardest part of a birthday for me is getting the table set up the way I like it. It always needs to be easy for littles to grab snacks as they play, but also give enough space that food isn’t stacked on top of each other (and in the way when multiple people get there).

I’ve also worked on the balance of things I do for the birthday party and things I don’t, and some of my fave tips (like getting a meal for yourself before the birthday party starts) that comes from hosting non-stop parties over the last 7 years.

Chicken-Themed Birthday Cakes and Cookies

While I’ve bought a lot of cakes in the past (or an entire range of desserts, like I did for my four-year-old’s pink cowgirl party), I don’t usually DIY the cake or outsource cookies. For my two-year-old’s chicken themed party, I ended up ordering royal icing sugar cookies in the shape of chickens and flowers from another local mom at a weekend festival.

They turned out perfectly:

The set came with 12 in total, which was more than enough. Actually, most of the kids (and adults) ended up eating half of one and moving on! A lesson I also learned from and applied when I ordered cookies for the Pink Cowgirl Party and 3-year-old party we have coming up. Instead of a full-size dozen, we’ve begun ordering two dozen mini cookies!

On the other hand, I ended up diy-ing her birthday cake! I usually don’t (because it can be time-consuming and wayyy too much pressure on myself), but after making my spooky mini cake (see here), I felt pretty confident I could get this one done:

I know the daisy isn’t a chicken and that there are plenty of chicken-themed toppers, but I very much last minute pulled this together and a cute, wooden two with a few daisies (like this one) fit pretty well!

The Food: A Two-Year-Old’s Chicken Tablescape

Food is the highlight of our birthday parties!! And I mean that legitimately. It’s the main place I decorate!! This one was pretty low-lift in comparison to some of the other tables I’ve done in the past (see also: my son’s Super Mario Birthday party from a few years ago, beautiful food set-up lol), but I still loved how it came together!

We ordered Chick-Fil-A’s chicken nuggets (although that’s a whole experience, not the biggest fan of their catering and timing) and snagged some veggies, fruit, cheese, and crackers from Sam’s Club. We also had too much food in general, but we’re always welcome to leftovers!!

Pro tip: when you’re hosting a party for toddlers, or really anyone under age 10, pick foods they can grab and go! If your littles are anything like mine, the last thing they want to do is eat when their friends and family are having fun playing at the party. Making it a grab-and-go style (even from their own plates) makes it easier for them to actually eat and avoid the post-party snack crashout.

Bonus pro tip: If you’re the party host, eat before the party!! I usually cater something, which means I’ll grab something there or on the way there for myself so I’m never left not eating (which has happened many, many times).

Can I also just say I’m obsessed with these cute chicken plates I snagged from store (can’t remember which, sorry, although these are a close match) and the pink tablecloths I snagged from Amazon (you can grab the set here).

My Two-Year-Old’s Favorite Gifts

This party recap I’m trying something new: the gifts my two-year-old loved. Shopping for a toddler is honestly the best and worst thing – they’re somewhat finding their interests, but they’re not quite there. But, there’s also a limit on the things that are safe for them.

While I’m working on a gift guide for two-year-olds, here’s also what my littlest loved from her party:

  1. Bike with training wheels! This one is supposed to last from ages 2-7, and was gifted over a balance bike because it’s what her sister has (and of course, she wants to do what her sister does!!) we couldn’t get her off of it for the rest of the party.
  2. Play-Doh! I’m a huge fan (never slime, though) and it keeps her busy when her siblings are at school and she’s at home.
  3. Mega-Blocks! This is a gift we’ve gotten for every kid around this age and it’s a long-time winner! It’s a great stepping stone to legos and really works on their coordination.
  4. My First Barbie Doll! This was a favorite again because of her older sister. She thought it was super cool to have her own barbie – the downside is this one was lost the fastest XD

Planning Your Next Party? Try this!

I loved this little chicken-themed birthday party and so did my little! And that’s really all it’s about – creating something they’re excited for and love to see and enjoy.
