This recipe was pulled together on accident while making our usual French Bread (what we now use 24/7 as sandwich bread) and usually, we would use the second loaf for garlic bread – but this time, I wanted to do something different!!
And so, the french bread garlic knots were born.
Also, we’re absolutely obsessed with them. Are they healthy? Dunno. Delicious? 110%. And that’s all we need to know as foodies in this household. But I won’t hold you for long, here’s the recipe you’re looking for:

Buttery French Bread Garlic Knots
Ingredients
- 2 Cups Warm Water (I like to turn the sink to "hot" and just use that)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 1/4 Tsp Instant Yeast
- 4 Tbsp Room Temp Salted Butter
- 5 1/2 Cups Bread Flour (You may need a bit more if your mix is a little wet, and you can sub all-purpose if you need to)
For the Buttery Topping
- 1 Stick Melted Salted Butter
- 1 Tsp Parsley
- 1 Tsp Granulated Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Grated Parmesan Cheese
Instructions
- If you haven't already, pull your butter out to soften. Put in ziploc and place in hot water if you're in a rush.
- Mix your 2 cups of warm water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 1/4 teaspoons of instant yeast in a small bowl. Let rest for 3-5 minutes until you see something foamy start forming on the top.

- While it's resting, mix your bread flour and salt in another, large bowl. Pour in your water mixture once it's foamy and mix until stuff starts to stick together and get chunky in the bowl.

- Hand knead or use a stand mixer with a kneading attachment and knead the dough for 10 minutes. I've gotten a perfectly smooth dough ball AND a bumpy one, they both taste the same to me (hence why I recommend just hitting the 10 minutes and calling it done).

- Let dough rest covered with a clean towel or shirt for about an hour, or until the dough is about doubled in size.

- Once your dough is done rising, you can do two things: split into two and create a French Bread loaf and garlic knots, or make one big batch of garlic knots!! I'm splitting into two.

- Let the dough rise for another 30 mintes.
- Pull out whatever you're using for your garlic knots and shape it loosely into a rectangle. Cut into ~ 8 pieces (16 if you're doing a full batch). PS this is a great time to start pre-heating your oven to 415 degrees.

- Now, you're literally going to "tie" your knots. Don't overthink this!! You don't want to roll or squish to get a "better" or "tighter" knot because they won't end up as fluffy!!
- Set these into a buttered dish (I use a round dish, you could use a square – it really doesn't matter). I like them to be close so they have soft sides.

- Bake @ 415 degrees for approx 12-14 minutes until tops are golden.
- While baking, melt the remaining stick of butter and mix in the parsley, garlic, and parmesan cheese.

- Once your knots are out of the oven, pour over your butter mixture!! This is the buttery goodness.

- And enjoy!
