How to Get a Great Start to the New Year as a Busy Mom

Winter Holidays can be such a rush for families… and usually, Moms are responsible for organizing and managing most things. Stocking stuffers, family meals, presents, and gatherings… Honestly, there were days when I only realized at 4 p.m. that I even missed lunch.

But looking at the faces of the Little Ones when we are all together, playing with dolls, cars or board games makes it totally worth of course 🙂

So it is quite understandable that as a Mom, it can be hard to remember to take care of yourself.

Well, I have been told 100 times, and even I hate to hear it, but it remains true: if Mom is fine, everything goes smoother. So if you are struggling to “steal” some me-time because of mom guilt, remember that you deserve it, and in the long run, it is something that all your Loved Ones will benefit from!

Self-care is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and emotional well-being. We all need to find a way to recharge our batteries.

Let’s make it a resolution for the New Year: have regular Mom me-time!

How to Make Time for Yourself as a Mom Right Now

Make time for yourself. Set aside sometime each day to do something you enjoy and that makes you feel good. Taking care of yourself as a Mom is so important for both your physical and mental well-being.

Here are some ideas for how you can take time for yourself:

Practice Meditation and Mindfulness

Taking the time to slow down and focus on the present moment can help you de-stress and re-engage with the world around you. Starting a gratitude, or happy journal in the new year could be a great opportunity to reflect each day on the great things that happened to you!

Take a Walk Outside and Enjoy the Fresh Air

Take a break from screens and spend some time outdoors. Nature has a calming effect that can help reduce stress and boost your mood.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise helps reduce stress, improves sleep, and releases feel-good endorphins. If you feel that it would take up way too much time, try to think a bit differently! You do not need to have a 1-2 hour exercise every single day! Just think about what you like to do, is that running in the evenings in your neighborhood? Or does yoga make you relaxed and ready for new challenges? Just find the sport that makes you happy and feel good, and ask for some help from your spouse, friends, or other relatives to take care of the kids for that time.

Alternatively, you can schedule a short, 15 minutes workout in your mornings, when everybody else is still sleeping in the house, so no need to ask for “favors” 🙂 This is what I am doing for almost 2 years now, and it feels so great to start the day with some me-time! I am more relaxed and patient in the morning rush too! So totally win-win 😅

Connect With Friends and Family

Staying connected with your friends and family is one of the most important things you can do to keep relationships strong. There are lots of ways to stay connected, such as sending a card or letter in the mail, making phone calls, or sending a quick text or email. You can also use social media, video chat, or even host virtual hangouts. Talking to people you trust can help you feel supported and connected. No matter how you do it, staying in touch is a great way to show your loved ones how much they mean to you while supporting your mental wellness too.

Schedule a Message or Spa Day

I know this is not for everyone, but if you enjoy such treatments, do not hesitate to save regularly some time for that! If you are not that much into wellness services, you still can take a relaxing bath or shower at your home. Whichever is what you prefer, your body also deserves some treats after your busy days!

Read a Book or Watch a Movie That You Enjoy

My number one self-care activity is reading. If you can dive into a great book it is really something that can fill your cup for the upcoming days (well, sometimes just hours, but still totally worth it!). Movies are also great choices, and it is easier to share the experience with friends or family.

No matter how you choose to practice self-care, it’s important to make time for yourself and give yourself the care and attention you need! Do not forget this resolution and have a lovely 2023!
